Bringing Sun Safety to the Forefront

As summer rolled in with its familiar heat and harsh UV, the Lions Club of Goolwa took proactive steps to protect our community. On the weekend of 15 and 16 November 2024, nearly 150 people received free skin cancer screenings, thanks to the arrival of the Lions Medical Research Foundation’s Skin Cancer Screening Bus.

Stationed at Goolwa Secondary College, the bus was staffed by a dedicated team—a driver and three accredited screeners—who tirelessly offer their expertise across South Australia and the Northern Territory. Their work is simple yet vital: providing free skin checks and referrals when needed. For many, this screening may be the first step toward life-saving early detection.

As Lions, we see this as more than just a health initiative—it’s a commitment to equity. In regional areas, cost and access can make routine screenings difficult. We know our community faces a troubling rate of skin cancer and melanoma, and bringing screening directly to local residents can change lives.

The weather over the weekend was challenging—blistering heat and strong winds—but our Lions volunteers didn’t hesitate. Every member stepped up without being asked, embodying our values of service, compassion, and reliability. Their presence ensured the event ran smoothly, warmly welcoming attendees and helping people feel cared for and informed.

We’re proud to stand behind this cause. Skin checks take just minutes, but their impact can last a lifetime. As the hot season continues, we urge everyone: be sun smart, get screened, and don’t wait until it’s too late.

This is what Lions do—bringing health, hope, and hands-on support to those who need it most.

Thanks to the Lions screeners, our passionate club members, and to Kath, who coordinated the weekend. Your efforts made a real difference.
