The Goolwa Lions “Book Den” is finally open!!

On 31 July last year the doors were closed and on 19 August the “Shed” as it was affectionately known, was gone. The Lions Club of Goolwa was left without its major fund raiser.  Customers were devastated. Residents had ever-growing collection of read books with nowhere to donate. It was evident from the calls, emails, letters, and people stopping Lions members in the shopping centre that the shed was being very sorely missed.

After delays and unforeseen problems in early April the Alexandrina Council, as a commitment of the Goolwa Oval Precinct redevelopment, handed over the keys to our fantastic looking, modern, ticking all the boxes, multipurpose facility. Then began the fit out, which for anyone who has started from an empty shell knows, can be costly. Luckily, Lions are well loved in our community, and we have friends. Although we did have to hand out a substantial sum for our fitted shelving around the wall of the display area, (for safety), close to everything else has been donated. Our free-standing shelves were from Strathalbyn Library, magnificent reception desk was from Wildlife Welfare Opp Shop, Goolwa, office desk, large ottoman, and other furnishings, from members of our community.

The plants and garden installation around the building was a donation from Bunnings with a work crew from multiple stores involved in the work. The yellow Lions roses down the drive, were donated by Lions President Kath and PDG Ron Sargent OAM. All the books are donated by the community, then sorted and sold by Lions Club members and volunteers. This is evidence of a community working together.

On Friday 7 June we re-opened. With a new look and a brand-new name, The Goolwa Lions “Book Den” can be accessed from Wildman Street, between the tennis courts and Bowls Club greens.
