Temporary closure of lions book market

Temporary Closure of the Lions Book Market

The Book Market shed has stood at the entry to the Goolwa Oval, Hutchinson Street, Goolwa for a very long time. The shed when full contained thousands of high-quality books ranging from fifty cents to $5. It maintained a high turnover, which meant stock was always changing. This is why the marked became and is the place to find good quality, affordable books in region. The market is loved by locals and visitors to Goolwa alike. You do not visit Goolwa without browsing through the Lions book market.

As part of the Goolwa Oval Recreation Precinct development the land on which the shed stands are required for development as tennis/netball courts and a spectacular entry to the new precinct. On 31 July the doors were closed to the public. Then began a massive effort by Lions members, volunteers and local CFS members to empty the shed of books, shelving, and fittings. On 19 August, the shed was demolished. In one sense a sad moment, but in another it indicates a new start for the Market. The much-loved Goolwa Lions Club Book Shed will be relocated to a new modern building with potential for growth and shared usage. It will easy access from both the oval grounds and Wildman Street, Goolwa.

The new market will open within the coming months, depending on delivery of building materials. Further reports will be published keeping you updated.
