More Than Just a Market—A Legacy of Service
At the Lions Club of Goolwa, we believe small ideas—when built on community spirit—can grow into something iconic. What began as Warren Siep’s humble vision for a shed selling secondhand fiction near Goolwa Oval soon blossomed into a vibrant hub for fiction lovers, knowledge seekers, and anyone looking for a friendly place to gather.
By the time it closed in July 2023, the original Book Shed had grown far beyond its roots. Shelves once stocked with popular novels now offered a rich diversity: children’s stories, non-fiction gems, puzzles, DVDs, and CDs. Staffed by both Lions and passionate locals, its roster swelled to over twenty-five volunteers. It wasn’t just stocked with stories—it became one. A place to connect, to browse, to linger. A place where funds flowed not into pockets, but into community programs, local clubs, and vital support networks.
Then, on June 8, 2024, thanks to the generous support of Alexandrina Council, the newly built Goolwa Lions Book Den opened its doors on Wildman Street, nestled between the tennis courts and bowling greens. With accessible amenities—kitchen, bathroom, meeting space—it’s not just a replacement. It’s a transformation. For the first time, we have a permanent office, space to sort and store, and a dedicated children’s area where imaginations bloom.
Thousands of books are now diverted from landfill and given second lives. Locals drop in weekly. Visitors return every holiday. And every dollar raised—now five times what we began with—echoes back into the heart of Goolwa.
We’re not here to prosper. We’re here to serve. And at the Book Den, that service is felt in every donated book, every warm greeting, and every moment of discovery shared across generations.
