Where Conservation Meets Community Service
Just a short stroll down Barrage Road in Goolwa, nestled low among the reeds, sits one of the region’s quiet treasures: a beautifully constructed wooden bird hide overlooking a tranquil lagoon on the Murray River a short distance from the Goolwa Barrage. Designed to blend naturally into the wetland surroundings, this thoughtfully placed structure has become a sanctuary—for birds, and for those who appreciate them.
Built, funded, and brought to life by the Lions Club of Goolwa in July 1987, the hide remains a proud example of how service to the community can leave a lasting footprint. Supported by the Department of Tourism, local Council, and Signal Point, the project was born out of a shared vision: to create a space that celebrates the region’s remarkable biodiversity while welcoming bird watchers, photographers, and nature-lovers from near and far.
Open daily from 8:00am to 5:00pm, the hide features bench seating and wheelchair access, making it comfortable and inclusive for all visitors. It offers a front-row view of the lagoon, where you’ll find an astonishing variety of resident birds and seasonal migratory visitors—winged ambassadors from across Australia and beyond.
Whether you’re an avid birder hoping to spot a rare wader, a traveller looking to soak up Goolwa’s rich natural environment, or simply someone seeking a peaceful moment, the Lions Bird Hide promises a rewarding experience.
This is community service in action—where Lions vision and volunteer spirit come together to protect habitat, promote tourism, and offer everyone a window into the wonders of the wild.
🕊️ Come and visit. Bring your binoculars, your curiosity, and your sense of wonder. Goolwa’s birds are waiting—and the Lions are proud to give you a place to meet them.
