The Lions’ Roar That Echoes Through Goolwa
In 1982, a small group of volunteers from the Lions Club of Goolwa saw a need—and quietly began a project that would grow into one of the town’s most enduring community treasures.
With no local newspaper to call its own, Goolwa’s stories often went untold or were squeezed into the margins of regional publications. The Lions changed that by launching the Goolwa Community Newsletter, a modest monthly publication with a bold mission: to deliver free news, promote local events, and celebrate the heartbeat of the town.
Today, more than 500 copies are distributed each month, filled with the voices and stories of Goolwa. One of its most beloved features is Around the Town, penned by Frank Tuckwell OAM, a local historian and Charter Member of the Lions Club. His vivid recollections offer glimpses into Goolwa’s rich past and the characters who shaped it.
But the newsletter is more than nostalgia. It’s a living snapshot of the town—reporting on community happenings, sharing updates from other service clubs, and showcasing local businesses. It’s where residents learn about events, read about achievements, and stay connected to the pulse of their town.
None of this would be possible without the dedicated Lions members and volunteers who pour their time and heart into producing the newsletter each month. From gathering stories to printing and distributing, their behind-the-scenes work ensures Goolwa’s voice is heard loud and clear.
Profits from the newsletter go into the club’s Administration Account, helping offset members’ annual fees and allowing the club to continue its vital work.
The Goolwa Community Newsletter is more than paper and ink. It’s a testament to what happens when a community cares enough to tell its own story—and when a group of Lions makes sure that story is heard.
