Overdue recognition for Tony Siciliano, building of local gazebo.

In a heartfelt moment nearly 30 years in the making, Goolwa’s own Tony Siciliano was formally recognised for something the community has quietly appreciated for decades: the beautiful gazebo by the Murray Smith Park lagoon.

Back in 1995, during his first year as a member of the Lions Club of Goolwa, Tony took on the task of building the gazebo almost entirely by himself. With no power on-site, it was all done the old-fashioned way—hand tools, hard work, and a whole lot of heart. While other club members chipped in with lifting and logistics, the construction was largely the work of one man with a vision and a deep sense of community spirit.

Fast forward to September 13, 2024, when friends, family, fellow Lions, and community members gathered to finally give that effort the spotlight it deserves. A plaque now stands proudly by the structure, not just marking the Lions’ legacy, but Tony’s personal craftsmanship and quiet generosity.

Tony’s response was pure humility. Proud, yes—but not boastful. For him, recognition was never the reason. His commitment, like that of so many dedicated Lions’ volunteers, came from a place of wanting to make a difference. And what a difference it’s made. The gazebo has become a cherished gathering spot—especially in the warmer months—for countless picnics, celebrations, and peaceful moments by the water.

Now, when people stop to admire the structure or enjoy a barbecue beneath its roof, they’ll know the story behind it. The story of a man who showed up, rolled up his sleeves, and built something that’s lasted—not just in timber and nails, but in community memory.

Well done, Tony Siciliano. Your work stands tall, and now, so does your name beside it
